I don’t understand the Mae West phenomenon. Partly maybe it’s because she didn’t make any films until she was 40. From her iMDB bio she was vamping men since 14. The double-entendres are mildly entertaining. I’m happy she gave Cary Grant his big break. But she seems…tame? No, that’s not right. Perhaps she just tries too hard. I dunno. Weird.
(As a child, I heard about Mae West long before I knew anything about her or even what she looked like. I was very interested in military history and did a lot of reading about World War II. The life vests they had were nicknamed “Mae Wests”. Partly, I reckon, because of the rhyme and partly because…well, I bet you can figure it out a lot faster than I did.)
