Top Ten Movies of the 2010s

It’s that time of the year when people put together their top ten movies of the year. I don’t watch many movies in the theater though (it’s not really in the budget for time or money what with having young children), so I don’t usually do that. But! This is also the end of the decade we’re coming to, and I’ve watched a few movies that were released in the past 10 years (mostly on DVD/Blu-Ray), so I thought I’d make a top ten list out of those.
I’ve watched 337 movies from the decade. Most were mediocre, at best. But, there were some that were good, and a few that were very good indeed. I use Letterboxd (ugh, that lack of a vowel) to keep track of the films I watch and summarize my opinion. So, I only rated one of them in the last 10 years with 5 stars: Toy Story 3. Yeah, surprised me too; I thought for sure there would be at least a few.

In no particular order, 4 1/2 stars:

  • Coco
  • Wreck-It Ralph
  • True Grit
  • Looper
  • The Trip
So that gets us through at least the top 6 then, even if I don’t rank them distinctly. The real logjam is with 4 star films. There are 36 of them. Not a bad percentage really; a bit more than 10% of the movies I saw from the last decade are very good. I’ll put the rest of them down below, but since I need to elevate 4 of them above the rest, here they are:
  • Hail, Caesar
  • War on Everyone
  • Logan Lucky
  • The Artist
These rest are (roughly) chronological, not in a deliberately ranked order indicative of quality or approval. (Okay, so I know a lot of people are going to want to fight me on the inclusion of The Last Jedi. I’m not going to sit here and defend it’s quality as a film or even as an entry in the greater SW universe. I’m just going to say that the movie felt like a SW movie. It was light-hearted without a lot of burdensome seriousness about figuring out how it all worked. I hate that. With Star Wars, I want to go, sit down, and enjoy an adventure spectacle. It delivered that. The pretentiousness was all shoved to the background, by and large. And! I might re-rate it lower if I ever bother to watch it again.)
